South Africans have in many ways been conditioned into believing that building with brick and mortar is the only way to go for affordable housing. It is believed that brick and mortar should be used for building if you want quality and that alternative building methods give a lesser product and are to be frowned upon. For this reason RDP houses are mostly built from brick and mortar, but the track record has shown that the quality of these house’s are extremely poor.
Approximately 70% of the developed worlds’ population live in timber frame homes whereas less than 1% of South Africa’s population live in timber frame homes. Timber homes offer superior insulation, low carbon footprint, very fast construction time and ease of building on difficult and sensitive sites.
